The Pakistan hockey team, which had been absent from prominent international events for the last four to five years, appears to be back on track. They delivered a thrilling performance against Korea in the first semi-final of the Asian Hockey Champions Trophy at Maulana Bashani Hockey Stadium in Dhaka.
The newly appointed head coach of the Pakistan hockey team, experienced Dutch player Siegfried Aikman, is hopeful about the upcoming third-place match against India. Aikman, who joined the team after leaving Japan post-Tokyo Olympics 2020, expressed confidence following the team’s impressive drag-flicking performance against Korea in the first semi-final.
Pakistan Hockey Team Field display was excellent but the defense was look like shattered as Coach was warned the area of concern in reply of my question in pre semifinal media talk from Dhaka. Korea scored two goals from penalty strokes, three from penalty corners, and one from a field goal. The two penalty strokes highlighted weaknesses in Pakistan’s defense.
The game was started with Pakistan’s lead when Captain Umar Bhutta in third minute, In reply Korea got the penalty stroke on swear fowl in the twenty five area in eleventh minute and Jang Jong Hyun leveled the difference easily and right in next minute again fowl and penalty stroke awarded another goal for Korea with Jang Stick. Pakistan’s Junaid scored goal in twenty second minute and with this match 2-2 leveled. Jang who was on hat trick come up again in twenty fifth minute on penalty corner and lead of Korea once again 3-2. In the 30th minute, Pakistan’s Afraz leveled the match once again. However, moments later, Korean Yang Jihun scored, giving Korea a 4-3 lead. For the next 14 minutes, both teams made good moves but failed to score. In the 44th minute, Korean Jeong Junwoo added another goal, bringing the score to 5-3 at the end of the third quarter. Pakistan’s drag flicker Ali Mubashir had a brilliant performance in the last quarter, scoring two goals in the 47th and 51st minutes to equalize the score at 5-5. Both teams fought hard for a place in the final, but Korean Jang, who had already scored a hat trick, scored his fourth goal in the 57th minute, securing Korea’s place in the final of the Asian Hockey Champions Trophy 2021.
Korea’s 6-5 victory over Pakistan marks a significant achievement for the Korean team, especially considering their previous head-to-head record. Prior to this semi-final clash, Pakistan and Korea had played a total of ten matches. Pakistan emerged victorious in five of those encounters, while Korea managed to win only two. The remaining three matches ended in draws, including the 3-3 draw in the Asian Champions Trophy stage one.
Pakistan has historically performed well against India, boasting 82 victories out of 176 encounters. However, in recent years, the Pakistan Hockey team has struggled against their arch-rivals. This trend includes their recent match in the Asian Hockey Champions Trophy 2021, where Pakistan lost 1-3 to India in the stage one match.
